Winter Storm Cora is bringing heavy snow, icy sleet, thunderstorms, and 20- 30 degree temperatures well below average to many regions, including the southeast and central plains. These conditions can create hazardous travel, power outages, and increased risks of water damage from frozen pipes. Take action now to protect your ministry buildings and reduce potential damage.
Below is a detailed checklist to guide your team in preparing for the storm.
Appoint a Building Monitor
Designate someone to regularly check on the building during and after the storm.
Identify a backup monitor in case the primary person is unavailable due to illness, vacation, or other reasons.
Ensure both individuals have access to keys, security systems, and a list of emergency contacts.
The Building Monitor Person Should Know How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
Turn faucets to a slow drip to keep water moving inside pipes, reducing the chance of freezing.
Prop open room doors and cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate.
Apply insulation sleeves or heat tape to exposed pipes, especially in basements, crawlspaces, or exterior walls.
The Building Monitor Person Should Know the Location of Water Supply Valves
Locate the main water supply valves for all areas of the building, including baptisteries, laundry rooms, and water heaters.
Label the valves clearly for easy identification in an emergency.
Store the necessary tools to shut off water valves nearby and ensure team members know how to use them.
Practice emergency procedures with your team so they can act quickly if a pipe bursts. Read more about frozen pipe risks
Maintain Building Heat
Set thermostats to at least 55°F (13°C), even in unused portions of the building, to prevent pipes from freezing.
Confirm that programmable thermostats are adjusted to maintain consistent heat throughout the storm.
Check that heating systems are functioning properly and schedule maintenance if needed.
Prepare Your Generator
Test the generator to ensure it is operational and has sufficient fuel.
Place the generator in a well-ventilated area, away from doors, windows, and vents, to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
Review the generator’s operation and safety procedures with your team.
Additional Tips
Clear gutters, downspouts, and drains to prevent ice buildup and water damage.
Stock up on snow and ice removal supplies, including shovels, ice melt, and sand for walkways.
Secure outdoor equipment and furniture to prevent wind damage.
Ensure your emergency kits are well-stocked with flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and a battery-powered radio.
By following these steps, you can help safeguard your ministry buildings and reduce potential storm-related damages. For more detailed guidance, visit Brotherhood Mutual’s Winter Storm Preparedness.
